Knee Pain Treatment

Knee pain can be caused by many different sources. Some pain can be caused by overuse with activity. This usually results with pain above or below the knee cap. You can also get meniscus related pain from tears or bruising. This pain is usually localized around the joint line or in the back of the knee.

Our physical therapists will work to evaluate the cause of the knee pain and provide treatment along with prescribed exercises to reduce your pain. The majority of our patients get some relief of knee pain within the first 2 weeks of treatment.

What causes knee pain?

Though there are many causes of knee pain, we will list the different types along with their causes. It is important to remember that all causes of knee pain listed below can benefit from physical therapy and there is a lot that you can do to both reduce your pain and improve your function.

  • Osteoarthritis: Caused by age related degeneration., disease, diet, and history of injury.

  • Meniscus tears: Typically caused by a twisting injury for the knee. Results in pain, delayed onset of swelling, clicking, popping, and locking.

  • ACL Tear: Occurs typically during pivoting and is usually non contact related. Results in pain, immediate swelling, and instability.

  • MCL tear: Usually occurs with contact to the outside of the knee causing the knee to collapse inward.

  • Muscle strains: Typically caused by over exertion of the muscle. Results in pain with movement.

How is Knee Pain Treated?

Knee pain can be complex. Often times, pain at the knee is the result of some sort of impairment or inefficiency at a joint above or below the knee.  For example, if you have weakness of the muscles that externally rotate your hip or the ones that lift your arch it may cause your knee to collapse inward while walking, running, or jumping. This cause irritation to the ligaments, tendons, and joint surface of the knee.

If you sprain your knee and suffer some swelling in the joint. It is important to regain the range of motion and reduce the swelling as quickly as possible to reduce impact that it will have on the overall health of the knee. The longer you wait, the longer the course of treatment typically takes.
