Manual Therapy

Manual therapy includes hands-on technique that involves us performing soft tissue work and/or joint mobilization to increase or restore flexibility, function, and range of motion. There are many types of massage we can apply depending on what is needed, level of tolerability, and what is comfortable for you. Manual therapy allows us to feel for possible abnormalities such as a stiff joint, tight muscle, swelling, or even a joint or muscle that moves too much. We can then help figure out whether your body needs more soft tissue work to help the muscles relax, joint mobilization to increase range of motion, or strengthening to correct muscle function. After that, we will work through a program that is adapted to your specific needs in order to achieve functional movements that are applicable to your specific therapy goals.

Therapeutic Exercise

Throughout your visits at physical therapy, we will slowly incorporate therapeutic exercises that are tailored to your specific injury and needs. Exercises induce “muscle hypertrophy,” or increasing strength, which will allow the muscles to help hold joints in a more optimal, stable position and help to relieve pain in and around the joints and muscles involved. This can help our bodies perform movements more efficiently, decrease pain, and increase strength and endurance in muscles that may be weak or lack activation. We will design an individualized exercise program based on current injury stage and individual needs and provide guidance and instruction how to best perform each movement. Eventually you will have the tools you need to perform each exercise and exercise program independently and confidently at home!

So whether it is to help improve posture to help with neck pain, get back to a sport or activity you love, or improve balance and coordination, therapeutic exercise will help restore lost function, increase strength, and improve quality of life!

Neuromuscular Exercise

Sometimes when we suffer an injury, whether it be from a surgery or during an activity, our muscles can be inhibited which leads to a reduction in function and activation. This can lead to our bodies coming up with new ways or patterns to perform a certain movement…. but not necessarily in the most efficient or pain-free way. Neuromuscular re-education is meant to help re-teach the muscles what their job is and to help restore normal function and patterns within the body. Through repetition and practice we will help induce a habit in the muscle so that it remembers what it should be doing throughout each movement and apply the restored muscle activation through functional movements that may have previously been an issue to perform.

Neuromuscular reeducation will eventually allow us to help restore natural movement and muscle strength, improve joint stability and muscle activation, and decrease compensatory movements your body may have developed during the early stages of injury or post-op recovery time. Eventually we will progress towards movements that are specific to your goals and help you achieve optimal performance!

So whether it is to help improve posture to help with neck pain, get back to a sport or activity you love, or improve balance and coordination, therapeutic exercise will help restore lost function, increase strength, and improve quality of life!

Medically Supervised Exercise

In our clinic, you will be always supervised by one of our staff; we value one on one care for our patients and love that it gives us the chance to deliver high quality, personalized care. We will create an exercise program that is appropriate for your injury or condition and take careful consideration to any factors that may hinder exercise performance or that may be contraindicated. We will always provide a safe environment for your needs while still challenging your body to help increase strength, balance, or mobility. We will work with you and your learning style preference to make sure we are both on the same page as to how to perform the exercise and the reason we are performing a certain movement.

If at any point you have questions as to the purpose of each exercise, please do not hesitate to ask us the “method behind the madness” and we will be more than happy to explain.
